Murcof featuring BCN216
+OPEN MARSHALL
where: Southbank Centre
when: Thursday 20 November 2008 7:45pm
what do we think: this one can't be missed
A new suite of music composed by the esteemed Mexican electronic composer Murcof whose distinctive hybrid of brooding electronics and classical sound sources is enriched by live strings and brass in a synchronised visual environment. This special commission allows Murcof to find full integration between all the elements in his sound, whether acoustic, analogue or digital. Strings, pixelations, brass, digital sweeps and video beams become a single whole in this new audiovisual composition. Collaborating with a viola, cellist and trombone players from Spanish classical ensemble Bcn216, Murcof will allow the unique qualities of acoustic instruments to mix with microbeats and vast digital atmospherics, letting tracks shift and mutate in a minimal environment. This will be an immersive experience.
This concert is part of Murcof's first full UK tour and coincides with the release of a new EP entitled The Versailles Sessions on The Leaf Label.
Opening the evening is Oren Marshall who uses electronics to twist the tuba's sound into new and wonderful shapes. He makes his instrument sing, whoop and feedback like Hendrix did his guitar. A pioneering player of acoustic and electronic tuba he has collaborated with the likes of Derek Bailey, Keith Tippet, the Pan-African Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.Produced by Qu Junktions for Contemporary Music Network. Promoted by Arctic Circle as part of the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3.
